Ever wondered how the three digit dialing code that we use originated and what the logic behind the same was.
The system started way back in nineteen forty seven under the North American Numbering Plan and is taken care of by the NANPA, which takes care of the administration of the same.
It is a unique system that was developed to assign the three digit number, called NPA, which is commonly known as the area codes. The same was first put to use by the global brand AT&T across the United States.
The same did not become fully operational till sixties, for long distance dialing was restricted till then. The list is ever growing with new NPA added every now and then and with the user density increasing year on year, we now have multiple NPA being assigned to the same geographical location.
The existence of Area codes before nineteen forty seven was limited as people relied on postal system as the telecommunication industry was not advanced enough and had not made in roads like it has in the last half century.
The area codes have now taken over the postal codes, as the volume of the trunk dialing or STD and local calls is way ahead of the daily post that moves across towns and cities in United States.
